Midwife
Oil on ACM
80x100cm
This is Sheilla. She moved from Zimbabwe to New Zealand in 2002 to escape the country's political turmoil, and is now a practicing midwife in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
The small figurine depicts the colloquially named Venus of Willendorf, which is one of the the first known works of art to have be discovered in human history (dated to approximately 25,000 B.C). It is thought to be a paleolithic representation of fertility and universal motherhood.
