Portrait Commission FAQs

How does a portrait commission work?

When doing a portrait (either a painting or drawing), it is important that I either work from photos I have taken myself, or from life. The reason for this is that considered composition, lighting and pose make or break a picture. It is important that I have control over these elements to ensure a successful result. Unfortunately this means I am generally unable to work from existing photographs that you may have in your possession, as the vast majority of them will be unsuitable.

How does a photoshoot work?

We will obviously need to meet in person, I am happy to either visit you, or have you visit me. Any significant travel costs will be covered by the client. Please allow about two hours for the photoshoot itself. This is to allow us plenty of time to set up lighting and camera, as well as experiment with pose, expression and clothing.
If distance is too great for either of us to travel, a professional photography service can be employed, and I can send instructions of specific elements that I will be looking for. The cost of this will be covered by the client.

How long will it take?

This very much depends on the size and complexity of the painting, as well as existing workload. But it will generally be several months minimum. I tend to work with oil paint in multiple layers. This requires that I allow sufficient time between layers, as well after the completion of the painting, for the oil paint to dry.
